Infected by the bacillus
“Next to my family and my business, art is what means the most to me. I usually say that I breathe through art. In reality, I have a high level of collecting mania. I can't live without art, I'm constantly hunting for a new work of art, and I get a very special feeling of happiness when I get my hands on it. Art is very, very addictive.”
Martin Nielsen, art collector
The exhibition will introduce the audience to some of the many exciting private art collections that surround us here in Jutland. The borrowed works will be put into dialogue with works from HEART's own collection, which is based on a private collection.
With the exhibition, HEART wants to give the audience a glimpse into this, for many, hidden world, and try to provide insight into the passion behind the desire to acquire a work, as well as shed light on private collectors and the museum's collecting practices. Why do we collect – and how?
HEART's collection is based on the private art collection of local shirt manufacturer Aage Damgaard. He was " infected with the bacillus", as his widow Bitten Damgaard once put it. He had to collect art, and he also had to share the joy of it with others. His first guinea pigs were the staff at his factory, and later he donated a large part of the collection to the foundation of Herning Art Museum. HEART's history is thus directly linked to private collectors and is proof of the importance of their passion for art for Danish art museums.
